New Resource: Steal my narrative audio syllabus
This week, I’m sharing my syllabus for my introductory narrative audio class. I hope that you can learn from it, take what you need, and/or improve on it. Over the coming weeks, I’ll be sharing additional lesson plans, slides, and resources.
I created the first version of this syllabus in 2016. It was deeply influenced by Rob Rosenthal’s syllabus for the Transom Story Workshop. (And stolen with his blessing.) I love everything about Rob’s approach, and I tried to imitate him. Seven years and 15 or so classes later, I’ve found my teaching voice and put my own spin on it. Thank you to all the people who’ve helped me shape this over the years, including: Rob Rosenthal, Robert Boynton, Adam Penenberg, Audrey Quinn, Ellen Horne, Claire Tighe, Ben Montoya, Betty Ming Liu, Maura Walz, Whitney Jones, and Jazmin Aguilera.
This is the latest iteration of my syllabus. It’s for a 3-month, weekly evening course that I may offer soon. The rate would be on a sliding scale, roughly in the range of $2,500-$3,500 per person. I’ll also do my best to be flexible with the pricing for those who might struggle with that price.
More on this coming soon! And if you have a a syllabus you want to share, please reach out. I’m hoping to create an open knowledge base for audio educators.
Jobs and Opportunities
Every week, I curate a bunch of podcast jobs and opportunities posted within the past seven days. The full list is on my website. Here’s my Olympic podium of this week’s listings:
🥇 Podcast Director, Dear Asian Youth
I wasn’t familiar with Dear Asian Youth, but I dig their mission: They’re a “youth-led, global organization that promotes intersectional activism, solidarity with other marginalized communities, and equality and equity.” Apply here.
🥈 Managing Producer, Here & Now, WBUR News and Programming
Cool opportunity for a supervisory role at a respected legacy show. Apply here.
🥉Internship, CFR Digital, Podcast, Fall 2023
For anyone who’s interested in foreign policy and international affairs. Apply here.
My updates:
As I wrote earlier, I’m strongly considering adding an evening course beginning in September, with payment on a sliding scale. If you’re interested, please reply to this email.
I added 75-ish more terms to our Podcast Glossary, including Aud Dev, Driveway moment, and Hindy. My goal is to add at least 50 terms a week until I get to 500, and to continue to add to it after that.
